I think that there's a verse in the bible that goes like this: "God gave you life and has the right to take it from you." I'm sorry, but when I read that... I couldn't help but put the bible down and hit my head against the desk. If society followed that logic, then it could be disastrous. "I gave you this thing, so I'm taking it back whether you like or not!" I can see why he's atheist. (Random comment is random)
('Religious Double Standard'... one of the best deviations I have ever seen.) That's why religion can't quite be intertwined with government. The religions' logic applied to the justice system or anything else can cause many things that we wouldn't approve of today.
Twain was an atheist/Freethinker at a time when it was near social suicide, you get hints of his opinions in many of his works like his short story involving Satan. But he really let rip in his autobiography which he stipulated shouldn't be published until long after his death.
He was also a member of the Anti-Imperialist League and wrote an essay on what he called the "Moro Massacre"which at the time really shocked people who were used to his folksy stories involving Huck Finn & Tom Sawyer.
That got to be the dumbest shit I read today. Have you ever read the Bible? God is okay with Christians raping the virgins of their enemies... and God helps his 'people' killing their enemies... seriously, you're one of the most ignorant Christians I've come across in a few days. And that is not something you should be proud of, in matter of fact, you should be very ashamed. How can a non-believer such as myself know FAR more about your religion than you do? Oh, wait, I do know! It's because I've a fucking education and that I've read the Bible! Jebus! -with love from an agnostic
No sense? How so? I think this makes perfect sense and I'm an Agnostic. He says that he is bothered with how the Bible teaches people to stone rude children to death, that rapists should marry their rape victim by force, that Earth is flat etc. and that he isn't really bothered by the parts he doesn't understand, like some of the more non-sensible verses in the Bible. But I know that you're too stupid to understand this rather simple concept, that is why you say it "make no sense at all". -with love from an Agnostic
Where does it tell you to stone kids, rape and marry women, and that the Earth is flat??? We reading the same bible??? Or are you just illiterate? Probably just illiterate, because I'm pretty sure Jesus stopped the stoning of a prostitute, and came up with the famous line "let those without sin cast the first stone"... you sir... are an idiot
While he probably has some of his points wrong, not all of them are. The bible does say a rapist should marry and support the woman he rapes, but I think this was a sort of punishment for him. The idea is since he took "ownership" of the woman (that's how they saw it back then) he should take full responsibility and thus support her and the child. The point is some things in the bible are outdated, that's all.
I don't think so. They're only outdated in a literal sense. Going back to the above example, today's societies wouldn't force a rapist to marry the person they rape, but the underlying ideology is still very strong: you need to take responsibility for you actions. The stories of the Bible make it seem ridiculous at a glance, but if you read for the words that are REALLY there, not just the ones you see on the page, it still holds very true, and has great value to all people, atheist, agnostic, or religious.
That's the worst... I've always hated people like that... so dishonest, they have no fucking clue what's about either... like the part where Noah gets so drunk that he passes out... I seriously can't find out what's going on, did the son want to fuck his father or his mother? :I
Why choice any? If you believe there is a God then why not just be a Deist? You don't need religion, even less than you need a religion that tells you what you should and shouldn't do, a religion that tries to force your into servitude and to die for them...
